Following the opening of You Were Here on February 25th, the exhibition was transformed into an interactive visual experience.

Passers-by on Via Tortona were invited to LOOK INSIDE, past an opaque veil covering all but two sections of its glass façade. Going one step further than the classic post-family vacation ambience of the original setup, this progression of the exhibition was reminiscent of peering into a giant View-Master: a look into the slideshow (which ran on a continuous loop) transported viewers headlong into Parrott’s evocative, warm world and away from the cold austerity of Tortona for a fleeting instant…

Despite Milan being caught in the last capricious throes of winter, Thursday’s opening of You Were Here at Wonder-Room, was warm and sunny. In the seven-part slideshow conceived by SM, Parrott’s always emotive work stirred yearnings for summer and simpler times. (The warmth was, of course, helped along magically by the flowing hot China Martini.)

Fantastical and strange faraway landscapes. The fixed gaze of a summer love. A fleeting (yet meticulously composed) snapshot of a moment nearly missed. Everything captivating and quietly exotic. And just like the in the photo slideshow that used to be an obligatory ritual after every summer vacation, every image was flanked at both ends by the delightfully nostalgic mechanical clicks and whirs of a circa 1950s projector.

Skye Parrott’s work itself, while charged with emotion, is neither alienating nor distant. Rather, it is rife with undying youth and its accompanying intrigue and curiosity. And, although the photos were taken all around the world, their flavor is unmistakably vintage American, full of optimism and open space captured in the whimsical, brazen colors of old film.

Here’s to warm nostalgia.
